Dr Douglas Maclean

M.B.B.S. (Qld), FRACS (Ortho), AOA

Dr. Douglas Maclean is a specialist hip, knee, and shoulder orthopaedic surgeon, who also has an interest in trauma. He has been an orthopaedic surgeon on the Sunshine Coast for over 10 years, providing high-quality care and service for its residents. He has extensive experience in all conditions affecting these joints, with a particular interest in joint replacement, arthroscopy, and sports injuries.

Dr. Maclean runs the Sunshine Coast Joint Replacement and Sports Injury Clinic, with rooms at the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital, and commenced consulting and operating at the Noosa Private Hospital in January 2018.

Dr. Maclean’s common surgical procedures include ACL reconstruction and meniscal repair following knee injuries, shoulder stabilisation rotator cuff repair, and hip arthroscopy for labral injury and impingement. He is also a high volume hip, knee, and shoulder replacement surgeon, with access to the latest innovations including computer and robotic assisted surgery.

Dr. Maclean is currently the only Sunshine Coast surgeon able to provide a full range of hip arthroscopy procedures, often enabling joint preservation. He has also been a leader in introducing the minimally invasive Anterior Approach to hip joint replacement to the Coast, providing patients with less pain, quicker rehabilitation, and a much lower dislocation risk. He has now been performing joint replacements through the anterior approach for approximately 4 years and does over 95% of hip replacements through this approach.

His priority is to provide a high quality, caring approach to the prompt diagnosis, treatment, and management of all hip, knee, and shoulder conditions. He also provides a rapid assessment service, for acute injuries and urgent clinical review, ensuring optimal care with appropriate initial management and best possible outcome.

Dr. Maclean is a Queensland trained Orthopaedic Surgeon, having completed his medical degree through the University of Queensland in 1995. He then went on to complete advanced training in Orthopaedics through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. After spending time as a staff surgeon at The Nambour Hospital, he embarked on further prestigious overseas post-graduate fellowship training in hip, knee and shoulder surgery both in Belgium and Italy.

Following his return, Dr. Maclean continued to work in the public system and was promoted to Director of Orthopaedics for the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services District in August 2008, he held this position until March 2013. He has an ongoing commitment to provide service to the public hospital system, with a part time appointment, providing care for patients, and teaching our doctors and surgeons of the future.

Dr. Maclean is a passionate sportsman, having achieved national honours in swimming and surf life saving when he was younger. He is still a keen surfer and triathlete, having also ‘discovered’ cycling in recent years. His other sporting interests include rugby union, rugby league and Australian Rules Football, having played all three codes while he was growing up.

Dr. Maclean looks forward to providing patients with quality service in a caring environment.
