Noosa Hospital specialist James Cox

Dr James Cox

BSc, MBBS, FRACS(Orth), FAOA

Dr Cox is a Queensland born and trained Orthopaedic Surgeon operating and consulting from his private practice at Noosa Hospital. He lives locally in Tewantin with his wife and three children. His interests include hip and knee arthroplasty, sports knee reconstruction and trauma.

Dr Cox obtained his medical degree from the University of Queensland in 2005, and stayed in Queensland to complete his orthopaedic surgical training. After obtaining his FRACS (Orth) in 2015, he worked as the acting Director of Orthopaedics at the QEII Jubilee hospital in Brisbane, focusing on elective hip and knee surgery.

Later in 2015, Dr Cox moved to London to complete dedicated subspecialty fellowships in his areas of interest. He completed his first two fellowships at St George’s Hospital in southwest London. Firstly, under leading UK arthroplasty surgeons, Mr Simon Bridle, Mr Philip Mitchell and Mr Jonathan Hutt, Dr Cox gained wide exposure to all aspects of primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty. This was the local tertiary referral centre for complex cases, with a special focus on complex revisions for bone loss and the management of infected joint replacements. Secondly, Dr Cox worked under Mr Omar Sabri and colleagues in the pelvic and acetabular trauma unit. As the major trauma centre for the southwest quadrant of the greater London area, he learnt about all aspects of contemporary orthopaedic trauma care and complex reconstructions.

Later in 2016, Dr Cox completed a knee fellowship at the Fortius clinic, a leading orthopaedic and sports injury clinic in central London. Under the supervision of leading UK knee surgeons, Mr Jonathan Lavelle and Mr Simon Church, they covered all aspects of modern knee surgery. This included arthroscopic ligament reconstruction and meniscal repair. They also focused on the surgical management of patellofemoral instability and early arthritis, including osteotomy and partial knee replacement.

After returning to Australia in 2017, Dr Cox worked as a staff specialist at the Prince Charles (elective) and Royal Brisbane (trauma) hospitals in Brisbane, before moving to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Dr Cox looks forward to a long and rewarding career in Orthopaedic surgery, providing Orthopaedic services to the local community at Noosa Hospital, whilst indulging his interests in skiing, cycling and the beachside lifestyle.
