Dr David Henshaw

Dr Henshaw is a Specialist General Physician and Geriatrician who joined Noosa Hospital in 2004.  He works as a Consultant Physician in general internal medicine but also has an interest in medicine in the older person.

David has in interest in a broad spectrum of illness including management of heart, lung, endocrine (including diabetes), renal, neurological (including stroke) as well as chronic illness and degenerative illness. However more often he will look after and assess patients with many of these illnesses together attempting to achieve the optimum outcome for the patient and their family. He is also recognized by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians for his previous qualifications in Geriatric Medicine and is happy to perform Complex Geriatric Assessments and cognitive assessments particularly from a medical perspective.

He is happy to assess patients for whom no clear diagnosis has been forthcoming and he also provides telehealth services.

David has extensive previous experience from which to draw from. His undergraduate training was completed in 1991 in Bristol, England receiving MB ChB. He then moved to London and worked in hospitals in the North and East London and trained in General Medicine and Geriatrics as well as receiving training in Intensive Care, Cardiology and Endocrinology. He passed the examination of Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in London in 1995. In 2000 after completion of his postgraduate training he was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in General Medicine and Geriatrics. In 2002 he received Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).

In 1997 David and his wife spent a year in Queensland at Ipswich Hospital. At the completion of his training there was a strong wish to return to Australia and in September 2000, David started working as a Consultant Physician in Kalgoorlie, WA. This experience allowed David to utilise his training to manage a challenging position in a remote part of Australia and became acutely aware of the ‘tyranny of distance’ but also the practical aspects of solving some of the issues presented. He also became familiar of the issues surrounding Indigenous Health. He was also required to utilise his intensive care training in supporting some of the most critically patients before transfer to Perth.

In 2004, David and his family saw the opportunity to return to Queensland and especially to the Noosa region where they had spent time holidaying in 1997.

Since commencing at Noosa Hospital in 2004, David has been heavily involved in the development of services in the hospital. He spent 9 years on the Medical Advisory Committee, two of those years as Chairman. He has helped expand the Medical Department to the current number of 4 physicians, a registrar and 2 RMOs.

He is currently deputy chair of the Noosa Hospital's Medical Advisory Committee and is now sitting on the Drug and Therapeutics and Infection Control Committees. He continues to look at further opportunities to develop the Physician Service in the area.

David is married and has 3 children. He tries to keep himself fit by swimming and has taken part in the Noosa Triathlon as part of the team (swim leg) for the past 4 years. He is a longstanding supporter of Arsenal Football Club.
