Milestone in prostate cancer care at Noosa Hospital

Noosa Hospital will reach a significant milestone in prostate cancer care on 21 September, with local urologist Dr Stuart Collins performing his 100th NanoKnife procedure for localised prostate cancer.

NanoKnife uses precisely delivered electrical pulses to destroy cancer cells within a targeted area of the prostate while aiming to preserve surrounding healthy tissue.

The treatment is an option for carefully selected men with localised prostate cancer and is designed to reduce the impact on structures surrounding the prostate, which can contribute to side effects such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.

The hospital's 100th procedure will be performed by Sunshine Coast urologist Dr Stuart Collins, who has led the development of the NanoKnife program at Noosa Hospital.

“Traditionally, men requiring treatment for significant prostate cancer have undergone surgery to remove the prostate or radiation therapy to treat the entire gland,” Dr Collins said.

“For appropriately selected patients with a small area of localised prostate cancer, focal NanoKnife treatment allows us to target the cancer while preserving much of the prostate and surrounding structures.”

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Australian men, with more than 24,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Advances in imaging technologies, including prostate MRI and PSMA PET scans, have enabled doctors to detect cancers earlier and identify patients who may benefit from targeted treatment approaches.

Noosa Hospital CEO Kelly Grant said the milestone reflected Ramsay Health Care's investment in expanding specialist cancer services on the Sunshine Coast.

"Performing our 100th NanoKnife procedure is a significant achievement for Noosa Hospital and demonstrates the expertise we've built in delivering this highly specialised treatment," Ms Grant said.

"Working alongside Dr Stuart Collins and our multidisciplinary team, we're proud to offer eligible men another evidence-based treatment option for localised prostate cancer, ensuring they can access high-quality care in a modern private hospital setting."
